What affects your project's cost?
Pricing depends on step count, material, condition and access — real numbers require a conversation, not a guess published online. Our guides explain the variables so you know what to expect before you call.

What areas does Durham Stairs serve?
We're based in Pickering and serve Durham Region directly, including Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Bowmanville and Courtice, plus the extended GTA. See our full service-area list for every city we cover.
Do you provide free estimates?
Yes. We assess your staircase or flooring in person before quoting — photos alone don't show subfloor condition, stringer layout or exact dimensions accurately enough for a real number.
Can carpeted stairs be converted to hardwood?
Yes, this is one of our most requested projects. We remove the carpet, padding and tack strips, check what's underneath, then install and finish new treads and risers — see our carpet-to-hardwood guide for what to expect.
Can existing stairs be refinished instead of replaced?
Often, yes — if the wood underneath the wear is structurally sound, sanding and refinishing gets a like-new result for less work than full replacement. We'll tell you honestly which applies to your stairs during the site visit.
Do you install new railings and spindles?
Yes, in wood, iron or glass, built to Ontario Building Code height and spacing requirements. We can replace a full railing system or just spindles and posts if the handrail itself is still sound.
Wood, iron or glass railings — which is right for me?
Wood suits a traditional look and can be refinished over time. Iron is thinner for the same strength, opening up sightlines. Glass gives the most open view and sidesteps spindle-spacing rules entirely. See our full comparison guide for the tradeoffs.
Do you build completely new staircases?
Yes — for basement developments, loft conversions, or layout changes where no staircase currently exists. We design the stringer layout to fit your available headroom and Ontario Building Code rise-and-run requirements before ordering material.
Can I send photos before booking a site visit?
Yes — send photos through WhatsApp or the contact form and we'll give you an initial read on your project, though a final quote still needs an in-person visit for anything beyond a rough idea.
Do you work on indoor stairs only?
Yes, exclusively — no exterior, deck, or outdoor stairs. That's the whole business.
Not sure what your staircase needs?
Send photos on WhatsApp, tell us your city and what you'd like changed, and we'll review the project and arrange the next step.
