A finish that's just worn or faded sands off more easily than one that's been through multiple recoats over the years, or one with deep scratches requiring more aggressive (and slower) sanding passes.
Colour change vs. same-colour refresh
Going noticeably lighter than the current stain sometimes needs extra sanding passes to fully remove the old colour, while a same-colour refresh or modest darkening is more straightforward.

Refinishing stairs alongside a whole-floor refinish is more efficient per square foot of total work than refinishing stairs alone, since setup, dust containment and finish products are shared across a bigger job.

It can, if going lighter requires extra sanding passes to remove the old colour fully — going to a similar or slightly darker shade is usually more straightforward. We'll assess your specific colour change during the site visit.
What if my stairs have deep scratches or gouges?
Deeper damage needs more aggressive, slower sanding to fully remove, and very deep gouges sometimes can't be fully sanded out without going through the wear layer (especially on engineered products) — we'll tell you honestly if refinishing won't fully resolve specific damage.
Do I need to move furniture for stair refinishing?
The staircase itself needs to be clear, and we'll ask you to move anything stored on or near the stairs, but refinishing just the staircase doesn't require clearing whole rooms the way whole-floor refinishing does.
